The term “flying saucer”refers to strange objects travelling through the earths atmosphere at very high speeds.Thousands of people all over the world claim to have seen them. Some believe them to be spaceships from other planets.Others insist that they are a secret type of aircraft being built on earth. Many people maintain that they are only natural phenomena happening under special temperature, light,or weather conditions All reports, however, agree that the strange objects move at extremely high speeds and fail to follow the laws of motion by reversing(逆转) direction instantly without slowing down. In the United States, the first flying saucers were reported on June 4,1947,by a private plane pilot. He saw nine objects travelling in the sky. Each was diskshaped and very bright.Because their movements were compared to those of a “saucer skimming across the water”, newspaper reporters called them “flying saucers”. Some weeks after the first reported sighting, the United States Air Force was given the job of investigating all the reports of flying saucers.Because of the confusing variety of shapes, sizes, and colors reported, the Air Force adopted the term Unidentified Flying Objects(UFO) to describe them. Since the Air Force officials began their investigation of flying saucers, they have identified most of the objects as stars, planes, manmade satellites, experimental missiles(导弹),or weather phenomena. Some of the UFO reports, including photographs, were deliberate(蓄意的)tricks made to cheat people. All the research so far has failed to prove that UFOs are spaceships coming from outside the earth. Most investigators agree, however, that more study is needed before the question of whether or not flying saucers really exist can be answered.21The term“flying saucer” is generally used to refer to.Aspaceships from other planetsBa secret type of aircraft being builtCsome natural phenomenaDstrange objects flying very fast in the sky【】22The first flying saucers got their name.Afrom a private plane pilot who saw themBfor their brightness in colorCbecause they looked like disks moving in the airDbecause they skimmed across the water【】23The Air Force preferred the term UFO because.Anewspaper reporters used itBthe term “flying saucer” was very confusingCUFO is a general term that can refer to a larger variety of objectsDthe Air Force didnt find any objects that looked like flying saucers【】24All the research has failed to identify any UFOs as.Amanmade satellitesBaircraftCexperimental missilesDspaceships sent from other planets【】25From this passage we know that.Athe US Air Force was the first reporter of flying saucersBthe term UFO was first used by the US Air Force investigatorsCUFOs are not worth further investigationDthe question of whether there exist flying saucers has already been answered 【】Passage TwoQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage. The American educator Horace Mann once said:“As an apple is not in any proper sense an apple until it is ripe,so a human being is not in any proper sense a human being until he is educated.”Education is the process through which man attempts to pass on to his children his hardwon wisdom and his ideals of a better world. This process begins shortly after birth,as parents seek to train the infant to behave as his culture demands.Schooling,or formal education, consists of experiences that are carefully planned to help young people learn what adults consider important for them to know and how they should respond to choices. While almost everyone accepts the goal of developing skills in the three Rs—reading, writing and arithmetic—it often seems impossible to reach agreement on any goal beyond that.In the broadest terms, the conflict over educational goals can be viewed as a conflict between two groups of people—conservatives and liberals(自由派). The conservatives tend to identify a desirable education with the transmission of the cultural knowledge, offering courses featuring the three Rs at the elementary level and academic(普通文化课的)studies or strong vocational(职业的)or business courses in the secondary school. They stress training of the mind and development of abilities. The liberals tend to be interested in the development of the “whole child,”not merely in training his mind or in preparing him for adult life in a remote future. They emphasize rich, meaningful school living in the present, and they view subject matter as a resource for total human development rather than as a goal in itself. They believe that content should be acquired not for its own sake but as a means of encouraging thought and inquiry.26What Horace Mann means is that.Aeducation is essential for mans growthBan apple is delicious only when it is ripeCa man is like a child without proper educationDeducation can be compared to the growth of an apple tree【】27At school, children.Afind it hard to win wisdomBhave choices in what they learnCare taught what adults select for them to learnDlearn how they should respond to teachers questions【】28The three Rs does not include.AarithmeticBwritingCreadingDreasoning【】29Its most unlikely that the conservatives should emphasize.Athe teaching of basic cultural knowledgeBcourses in three Rs in the elementary schoolCcourses such as modern physics and marketing at the secondary levelDthe development of the student as an individual person【】30The liberals hold that.Athe goal of school education is mainly to prepare students for adult lifeBteaching activities should be rich and meaningful to the studentsCcourse content should be learned and remembered for future useDbook knowledge is the only resource for learning【】Passage ThreeQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. It has been a widespread belief that the American family is dying. But a new study reveals that the American family is stronger than ever. This study affords surprising evidence of the persistence of American commitments to family life. The American family is changing, not dying:It is becoming smaller, men and women are becoming more equal, and the divorce rate is higher. But despite the high divorce rate, marriage has never been more popular. The majority of divorced people remarry, but only 2% marry more than twice. Most marriages last a long time, and a large proportion of divorces are from teenage marriages.Depending on the specific situation, theres often good reason for teenage marriages to break up. There is no evidence that children receive less attention from mothers who work outside the home than from mothers working inside the home.So far the amount of educational or development time hasnt varied very much, whether or not the mother works outside the home.In fact, working mothers try to make up for it by setting aside time only for their children. The study shows that television is by far the most significant new childcare arrangement of this century. The most important activity for children up to age 14 is watching television. School is the second most timeconsuming activity for children. They spend an average of about 19 hours a week in school.A larger proportion of children go to school now than ever before, and they stay in school longer.Another big change is that the proportion of very young children in daycare centers(日托站) has almost doubled in recent years.Compared with these two dramatic changes in child activity, the changes caused by mothers working outside the home appear very small.31The main idea of this article is that.Athe American family is dyingByoung people today dont want to get marriedCthe American family is changing, but it is stronger than everDeducation has resulted in dramatic changes in the American family【】32Which of the following statements is NOT true?AMarriage is more popular than before.BMany divorced people remarry.CThe majority of marriages last long.DWorking mothers devote less time to their children.【】33The author of this article believes that.Athe American family is here to stayBchildren should not watch so much televisionCmothers should not work when their children are smallDteenage marriages should be encouraged【】34What is the most significant new childcare arrangement of this century?AThe daycare center.BTelevision.CThe schoolDDevelopment time.【】35According to the writer, which two major factors have led to the belief that the American family is dying?AThe divorce rate is high and working mothers neglect their children.BThe divorce rate is high and children care more about television than anything else.CDivorces are becoming increasingly more and many teenage marriages break up.DChildren stay in school longer and mothers have little time to take care of them.【】PART TWOⅣ.Word Spelling(10 points,1 point for two words)将下列汉语单词译成英语。作为提示,每个单词的词类、首字母及字母数目均已给出。请将完整的单词写在答题纸上。36表扬 v.p 37橡皮n.r 38表面n.s 39厚的a.t 40蒸汽n.s 41权力n.p 42噪声n.n 43第九num.n 44大声的a.l 45方法n.m 46羞耻n.s 47紧张n.t 48非法的a.l 49运气n.l 50中间的a.m 51严重的a.s 52财富n.w 53浅的a.s 54信号n.s 55胜利n.v Ⅴ.Word Form(10 points,1 point for each)将括号中的各词变为适当的形式填入空白。答案写在答题纸上。56Many people feel that the United States(have) a very complicated tax collection system.57In 1964,the Olympic Games in Tokyo(become) the first program to be transmitted via satellite.58In the recent past, medical researchers(begin) to emphasize the fact that heart diseases are associated with stress, smoking and a lack of exercise.59Taxes consist of the money which people pay(support) their government.60For centuries the Atlantic Ocean kept the Americas from(discover) by the people of Europe.61The American consumer often feels constantly(disturb) by insurance agents.62Women tend to engage in more eye contact than men, especially when(talk) to other women.63Though marriage(practice) in almost all countries of the world, the customs are quite different from one culture to another.64No one has been able to prove that fish is any(good) for the brain than many other kinds of food.65If we did not have atmospheric pressure,we(can, not have) automobile tires.Ⅵ.Translation from Chinese into English (15 points,3 points for each)将下列各句译成英语并将答案写在答题纸上。 ⅦTranslation from English into Chinese (15 points)将下列短文译成汉语并将答案写在答题纸上。 While the quantity of food needed by the body is measured by the amount of energy,or calories,it has,the quality of food is determined by its nutrients.Nutrients are the substances in food that are needed by your body. You can consume enough soft drinks, bread, and potatoes to supply you with enough calories for the energy you need. But these foods will not supply you with all the necessary nutrients your body needs in order to function well. The spires and the domes, the college walls and towers looked as peaceful as when they were first built, hundreds of years ago. When they drove down, over the River Thames and into the city centre, they found it was not so peaceful after all! The main streets were packed with traffic: cars, lorries, coaches full of tourists and the bicycles which the students use to get about. But as soon as they had managed to park the car and get away from the roaring traffic, they discovered a completely different world. Narrow cobbled streets which had hardly changed since the Middle Ages ran between the high college walls of grey or yellow stone. Inside the great double gates of each college they found quiet squares of grass, surrounded by the chapel, the library, the dining-hall and the rooms where the students and teachers live. Many colleges had the most beautiful gardens where one could sit and read, talk, work or dream. Most of the students, or undergraduates, wore informal clothes: sports coats, or pullovers, and slacks. But some of them were wearing their black gowns. George explained that they had to wear these when going to lectures or to their weekly meeting with their tutor, or teacher. Tom and Anne were very surprised to see a few young men dressed in formal black suits, with ties, gowns and scholars’ caps. Anne asked whatever they were doing, wearing evening dress in the morning! George laughed and said that this was the official dress for taking examinations, many of which were held in June.In one college, they visited the dining-hall. It was enormous with a high roof held up by great wooden beams with windows of stained glass as in a church, and long heavy tables and benches. At one end was the “High Table”, which is usually reserved for the Head of the college and the teachers. It really was high, raised on a wooden platform above the level of the rest of the hall. An undergraduate may sit at the High Table once on the day when he has passed all his examinations, takes his degrees and becomes a graduate.21. An undergraduate may sit at the High Table on the day he _______.A. receives his degrees B. passes his examsC. takes his exams D. leaves schoolPassage 2An ideal design for a toothbrush has not been invented. Dentists have put forward many different designs over the years and each has its advantages. We all know the problems of trying to clean less accessible areas, where it is difficult to see and space is restricted. In trying to clean the backs of our lower front teeth and our wisdom teeth we have produced toothbrushes with every type of bend in the handles and curve on the surface of the bristles(猪鬃、毛发). Added to this there is the choice of natural bristle or nylon for the heads of the toothbrush. After numerous tests it has been found that there is no difference in effectiveness between the natural and artificial bristle. In fact, dentists are finding more advantages with the nylon toothbrush. Nylon bristle is said to last longer, is more easily cleaned and harbours fewer germs. The individual nylon bristles tend to be more consistent in texture and do not become soft. The bristles, moreover, do not split as is the case with natural bristle. The main advantage of natural bristles appears to be that they are more resilient(有弹性的) when new. Another controversy is the appearance of hard, medium and soft toothbrushes. We are told that certain hard brushes are good for smokers and promote healthy gums. Once again the publicity is misleading, starting with the conception that hardness means a bristle of a tougher substance. This is not so, for a hard toothbrush is one in which the diameter of the bristles is greater, thus making the brush more rigid. This causes problems because the gums are easily injured and the tooth surface is more easily worn away by this type of brush. In fact, too much pressure and the wrong technique with a hard brush can cause much damage to the teeth and gums. As the bristles are thicker, they cannot get into the narrow openings so easily. The only advantage of this type of brush is that it lasts longer. In general, therefore, a hard toothbrush is not recommended unless used with extreme care. It is much more advisable to use a medium or soft bristle toothbrush. They don’t have a very long life, and replacement is necessary as soon as the bristles split or fall out.26. According to the passage, the artificial bristle is _______.A. more effective than the natural oneB. less effective than the natural oneC. just as effective as the natural oneD. firmer and cleaner than the natural one27. Which of the following, according to the passage, is an advantage of the nylon toothbrush?A. The bristles split more easily.B. The bristles are free from germs.C. The bristles always stay firm.D. The bristles last longer.28. A hard brush is _______.A. a brush with hard bristles B. a brush with thick bristlesC. good for smokers D. good for the gums29.
