Academic Dishonesty on Campus

It is shown in the recent surveys that many college students copy papers from the Internet to save the trouble of doing their homework. In my opinion, this kind of academic dishonesty is very harmful to these students.

First, copying papers from the Internet makes students lazy. Copying papers from the Internet seems easy and can save some time and trouble, therefore, students will do this more and more often and seldom work hard to complete their papers on their own. In other word, students will become lazier and lazier. Second. students can lean little from copying others’ work. Students cannot improve their abilities just by downloading papers from the Internet without their own thinking and working. What’s worse, once students get used to academic cheating, they may also cheat in other cases in the future, which will be very dangerous for them.

To prevent academic dishonesty on campus, some punishment by the school may be necessary. But the most important thing is that teachers should talk to those students, and make them aware of the fact that copying others’ work cannot bring them any knowledge and that only by working hard can they improve themselves.

The number of applicants for civil servants has increased abruptly in recent years. Many people believe it is an appealing job, while others don't think so. What is your opinion?

You have just received a phone call from your mother at the" hospital. She is ill and you must get there right away. Write a note to your teacher to ask for leave.

Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriateness.

范文:

Is Civil Servant an Ideal Job?

Every year the number of applicants for government position vacancies increases sharply. Many people believe that being a civil servant is very nice because working for the government can bring you with comparatively higher and steadier salary, better welfare, and more comfortable working conditions. While others argue that a civil servant's work often prevents one from bringing his strongpoint into full play. In my opinion, civil servant is not a wise choice for some people.

First, civil servant is not an ideal job for those people with active characters. A civil servant's work is somehow regular and boring, so an active person may not stand doing almost the same work day after day and year after year. Second, civil servant is not a good choice for those people with creative talent. These people can do much better and contribute more in a creative job, such as becoming a drawer or a composer. And I cannot imagine what a tragedy it will be if a talented dancer puts away her beloved dance shoes, or a mathematician leaves his lovely numbers, just to rush for a high-paid position of civil servants.

Civil servant positions are not suitable for some people, so please look before you leap to apply for these jobs.

SECTION A COMPOSITION

Are Western Festivals Undermining Chinese Culture?

In recent years, more and more young people have been fascinated to celebrate western festivals, such as Valentine's Day and Christmas. However, many young people don't remember traditional Chinese festivals like Dragon Boat Festival and Festival of Lanterns. Some people, therefore, worry that western festivals are undermining Chinese culture. But in my opinion, this will not happen.

I believe that Chinese culture will be kept well. First, young people like to celebrate western festivals just because these festivals are fresh and interesting to them. When they get used to them, they will lose their interest in them. While the traditional Chinese festivals will be celebrated no~ matter whether people are interested or not, because it's our own culture. Second, our country has set these traditional Chinese festivals as legal holidays so that people can have several days off from their work. People, especially young ones, like to have holidays on which they don't need to go to school or work. Therefore, they will be counting the days when a traditional Chinese festival is coming and planning how to celebrate the festival.

In one word, western festivals will not undermine Chinese culture, but just add some fun into our daily lives.

SECTION A COMPOSITION

On Dormitories Security

It is reported that recently in quite a few universities, dormitories on campus have been broken into and burglaries have happened every now and then. Students have complained a lot that burglaries are like nightmares in their college years. I think it's high time that both students and universities did something to reduce and eliminate this kind of crime.

On the one hand, there are some measures which universities can take. First, universities should have all the dormitory doors and windows checked, find out and repair the broken ones so that thieves cannot go in easily. Second, the number of university security staff should be increased. Security personnel should patrol on campus and cross-question any suspicious person. On the other hand, students should also do something to protect their belongings. First, when they leave their dormitories, they should keep doors and windows locked to keep out sneak thieves. Second, students should lock their valuables up in lockers. In this way, they can reduce the risks of burglaries happening.

In one word, both students and universities should do something to reduce burglaries in dormitories. And only in a safe dormitory can a student lives and studies happily.

Before the mid 1860’s, the impact of the railroads in the United States was limited, in the sense that the tracks ended at this Missouri River, approximately the center of the country. At the point the trains turned their freight, mail, and passengers over to steamboats, wagons, and stagecoaches. This meant that wagon freighting, stagecoaching, and steamboating did not come to an end when the first train appeared; rather they became supplements or feeders. Each new “end of track” became a center for animal drawn or waterborne transportation. The major effect of the railroad was to shorten the distance that had to be covered by the older, slower, and more costly means. Wagon freighters continued operating throughout the 1870’s and 1880’s and into the 1890’s. Although over constantly shrinking routes, and coaches and wagons continued to crisscross the West wherever the rails had not yet been laid. The beginning of a major change was foreshadowed in the later 1860’s, when the union Pacific Railroad at last began to build westward from the Central Plains city of Omaha to meet the Central Pacific Railroad advancing eastward from California through the formidable barrier of the Sierra Nevada. Although President Abraham Lincoln signed the original Pacific Railroad bill in 1862 and a revised, financially much more generous version in 1864, little construction was completed until 1865 on the Central Pacific and 1866 on the union Pacific. The primary reason was skepticism that a Railroad built through so challenging and thinly settled a stretch of desert, mountain, and semiarid plain could pay a profit. In the words of an economist, this was a case of “premature enterprise”, where not only the cost of construction but also the very high risk deterred private investment. In discussing the Pacific Railroad bill, the chair of the congressional committee bluntly stated that without government subsidy no one would undertake so unpromising a venture; yet it was a national necessity to link East and West together.  1. The author refers to the impact of railroads before the late 1860’s as “limited” because ____ A. the track did not take the direct route from one city to the next B. passengers and freight had to transfer to other modes of transportation to reach western destinations C. passengers preferred stagecoaches D. railroad travel was quite expensive  2. What can be inferred about coaches and wagon freighters as the railroad expanded?  A. They developed competing routes. B. Their drivers refused to work for the railroads. C. They began to specialize in private investment. D. There were insufficient numbers of trained people to operate them.  3. Why does the author mention the Sierra Nevada in line 17?  A. To argue that a more direct route to the West could have been taken. B. To identify a historically significant mountain range in the West. C. To point out the location of a serious train accident. D. To give an example of an obstacle faced by the central pacific. 4. The word “subsidy” in line 27 is closest in meaning to _____. A. persuasion B. financing C. explanation D. penalty 根据文章第六行至第七行“rather they became supplements or feeders”和第十行至第十三行“Wagon freighters continued operating throughout the 1870’s and 1880’s and into the 1890’s. Although over constantly shrinking routes, and coaches and wagons continued to crisscross the West wherever the rails had not yet been laid.”
